The Impact of Micro Plastics on The Environment from Athleisure Clothing

Polyester and nylon are the first and second most manufactured fibres in apparel. These fibres are made of petroleum-based polymers, more commonly known as plastic. When garments made of these fabrics are washed or discarded, they release micro-plastic fibres that are toxic for humans and the environment.

The water of Lake Ontario has levels of micro-plastic pollution as high as some of the most polluted areas of the oceans.

Approximately 90% of the water samples taken from the Great Lakes over the last 10 years contain micro-plastic levels that have been deemed unsafe for wildlife.

The impact of microplastics on the environment from athleisure clothing is an increasingly concerning issue. Microplastics are tiny plastic particles, less than 5mm in diameter, that originate from various sources, including synthetic fibers used in textiles. Athleisure clothing, which often relies on materials like polyester, nylon, and spandex, contributes significantly to the release of microplastics into the environment.

Sources of Microplastics from Athleisure Clothing

  1. Washing Process: Every time synthetic athleisure garments are washed, they shed microfibers. These microfibers are a type of microplastic that can pass through water treatment facilities and end up in oceans, rivers, and lakes.

  2. Wear and Tear: The friction from wearing and laundering athleisure clothing also causes the release of microplastics into the air and water systems.

Environmental Impact

  1. Aquatic Life: Microplastics can be ingested by marine organisms, leading to physical harm, digestive blockage, and exposure to toxic chemicals. These plastics can also accumulate in the food chain, eventually affecting human health.

  2. Soil Contamination: Microplastics can settle in soils, affecting soil quality and potentially harming terrestrial organisms. These particles can alter soil properties, affecting water retention and plant growth.

  3. Air Pollution: Microplastics can become airborne, contributing to air pollution. This can affect respiratory health in humans and animals.

    Our Take

Our Earth demands our utmost respect and care. Ecosystems compromised by pollutants inevitably endanger human health as well. The choices we make in our attire — from acquisition to disposal — resonate far beyond personal aesthetics, impacting the very fabric of our shared environment. Our products are made with organic cotton which are free of harmful micro plastics.

We encourage you to purchase clothing that is well-made from natural fibres. These garments will last longer and will help to reduce the spread of micro-plastic fibres in our environment.

Our pledge to use predominately natural based fabrics at KAMINSKA has never changed. We select fabrics that are spun with natural fibres, such as organic cotton, bamboo, silk and cashmere. Our New Dream Sports bra made of KAMINSKA Organic Cotton™ and is the first sports bra of its kind. Proving that a cotton bra can still deliver the high functionality of technical apparel.
